I am the alchemy of intention, nothing is going to stop me!
Oh you handsome devil
Symbol – Ram, Ruler – Mars, Metal – Iron, House -1st, Element – Fire, Modality – Cardinal, Humor – Choleric, Body – Head, Polarity – Libra, Quality – Masculine
The name Aries comes from the Latin word for ram. The Aries glyph ♈️ depicts the horns of a ram, the symbol for Aries.
Aries is the first sign of the zodiac; it presides over the first house, the house of self, and is the first of the cardinal signs. Cardinal signs are the initiators of the zodiac. Aries starts at the vernal equinox and ushers in the spring, representing new beginnings, procreation, growth, a waking up from the winter.
Aries is ruled by the planet Mars and, like the god of war, Aries is the warrior of the zodiac. The energy is yang and quintessentially masculine. Aries is a fire sign which correlates to the choleric humor, hot and dry.
The constellation Aries is shaped like a ram’s horns and is made up of nine main stars. The constellation is associated with the story of Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology because it represents the Golden Fleece that they sought.
The quest to obtain the Golden Fleece was perilous, thwarted by danger, hazardous seas, a sleeping serpent guarding the fleece, and many other foreseen and unforeseen dangers. The journey symbolises the courage and determination of Aries and inspires us with its bravery.
Arians are bold. They are the ardent force of nature in the spring; the green shoots that are determined to push through the earth; they are irrepressible. They have the “will to power” that Nietzsche spoke of.
Arians are impulsive and competitive; they do things quickly, tend to be in a hurry, work hard, play hard, take risks, can be reckless and excessive; the maxim ‘seize the day’ must have been coined with Aries in mind.
Aries often excel in roles that require leadership, quick decision-making, and the ability to motivate others. They may be drawn to careers in entrepreneurship, sports, military, or any field where they can pioneer and set trends. For hobbies, they often enjoy physical activities, extreme sports, or anything that challenges their stamina and determination.
There is also a naivety and innocence to Aries, childlike, selfish, and enthusiastic, acting without thinking. They can be quick to anger, aggressive, impatient, and irritable, but they cool down just as quickly. They are forthright and honest.
Homeopath, Luke Norland, associates Mars with Sankaran’s typhoid miasm, ”flies into battle without thinking of the consequences, rash, bold, impatient.”
The archetypal remedy picture of Aries is Nux Vomica. Nux Vomica, like Aries, is energetic, competitive, addicted to stimulation, including sex, drugs, and fast cars. Nux Vomica, therefore, can balance the more negative traits of Aries, their fiery temperament, impatience, anger, dietary excesses, gastric issues, insomnia and overall stressful lifestyle.
Aries governs the head and the brain as well as the muscles, red blood cells and the male reproductive organs (alongside Scorpio). It also governs the adrenal glands responsible for controlling the sympathetic nervous system. The fight-or-flight response is very characteristic of the remedy Aconite, which fits the Aries archetype.
Arnica is also well suited to Aries as their lifestyle and temperament can lead to accidents, injuries and bruises.
Aries governs the clinical symptoms of inflammation, heat (calor), pain (dolor), redness (rubor), and swelling (tumor). It therefore has a keen association with acute diseases, diseases with the suffix ‘itis’: gastritis, tonsillitis, colitis, etc.
The main pathologies associated with the Aries temperament are headaches, hypertension, muscle spasms, sports injuries, heartburn and constipation. Ailments can come on from anger.
I would postulate that we are looking at stage 1 of the periodic table, the start of the Fool’s journey in the Tarot.
Homeopath Jan Scholten cites – “Stage 1 is the spontaneous start, the impulsive beginning. Things are done without reflection. This leads to naive, instinctive, simplistic, and even childish or foolish behaviour. It can also lead to one-sidedness, which seems rigid, manic, alone and lonely.”
Mars’ metal is iron, thus Ferrum Metallicum is also suited to the Aries picture, in particular its connection to the red blood cells for which iron is an essential component.
To paraphrase homeopath Peter Morrell on iron:
Some incline to violence or criminality. Iron is softened, domesticated, and improved with silver, copper or gold. The iron type needs to be less assertive and more kind, needs to be mellowed and made more passive and receptive to others’ needs. Nux Vomica and Coffea types abound here, also Sulphur and Ferrum Metallicum.
Sanguinaria is a very effective remedy for the characteristic Aries headache.
The remedy Red and the gemstone Ruby, by association with Mars, may also be indicated.
Kali Phosphorica is the designated tissue salt for Aries. It has been called homeopathic Valium. It supports brain function and aids insomnia.
The above is just to serve as an amuse-bouche; there are many other remedies that may be of particular use to the Aries constitution and temperament. And of course, an astrologer/homeopath would always take into account other planetary signatures and placements to complete the full remedy picture.
